Girl Made of Stars (ARC) Review

This is a book that hurts. This is a book that heals.

Y’all. I can’t even right now with this book. I just binge read most of it today and honestly.

Sarah’s Sucky Summary: Mara has to face her own demons after her twin brother is accused of rape by her friend, and she doesn’t know who to believe.

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

I’ll admit it, I went into this book with a lot of reservations. I was worried the perspective of Mara would quickly turn into a defense for her brother, or worse, allegations of another lying rape victim.

Obviously, this was not the case.

Mara’s voice is so achingly realistic, from her desperate denial and need to believe her brother, and her better sense and loyalty to her friend. She doesn’t sugarcoat how rape can easily destroy everyone connected to those involved, and is more than willing to snap at anyone who dares take her brother’s side – even her own family.

This book deals with everything, from a subtle schoolyard patriarchy to the blatant lack of empathy in our legal system with rape victims. It’s a rage-inducing, eye-opening book that should be required reading.

It also includes things like gender nonconformity, sexuality, blurring the lines between friendship and love, using sex as an escape, female empowerment, and being comfortable to be truly open with yourself before being able to do so with the people around you.

It’s a beautiful story of lives changed forever, and hopefully, for the better.

The characters are not the things that happen to them, though they can be shaped by their experiences, their quiet strengths in the time after is really what defines their characters.

This was another book I loved by Ashley Herring Blake (check out my review of her other book, How to Make a Wishhere.)

Plus, can we just talk about this cover??? The star imagery gave the book that extra sense of beauty in all of its ugly, messy content.

Trigger Warnings: sexual assault
